Spider veins are one of those things that sneak up on you. You notice a small cluster on your thigh, then a few more near your ankle, then eventually you're reaching for cover-up before pool days or avoiding shorts in the Mississippi summer because you're self-conscious about what people will see.

You're far from alone. Spider veins — the small, visible red, blue, or purple vessels that branch outward in web-like patterns just beneath the surface of the skin — are extremely common. They affect a significant percentage of adults, particularly women, and while they're generally harmless from a medical standpoint, the way they make people feel about their appearance is very real. At Glo-Med Aesthetics & Wellness in Flowood, Mississippi, we offer sclerotherapy — the gold-standard treatment for spider veins — in the same professional, personalized environment you'd expect from every other service we provide.

What Causes Spider Veins?

Spider veins form when the tiny valves inside small blood vessels weaken or fail. These valves are responsible for keeping blood flowing in one direction — toward the heart — and when they don't function properly, blood pools in the vessel, causing it to dilate and become visible through the skin.

Several factors increase the likelihood of developing spider veins. Genetics plays a significant role — if your mother or grandmother had them, your own chances are considerably higher. Prolonged standing or sitting (common in jobs that keep you stationary for hours), pregnancy, hormonal changes, sun exposure, and age all contribute to their development. Women develop spider veins more frequently than men, though men certainly aren't immune.

Spider veins most commonly appear on the legs — particularly the thighs, calves, and ankles — but they can also develop on the face, particularly around the nose and cheeks. On the face, they're sometimes referred to as broken capillaries or telangiectasias.

What Is Sclerotherapy?

Sclerotherapy has been the standard treatment for spider veins for decades, and it remains the most effective option for most patients. The treatment involves injecting a specialized solution — called a sclerosant — directly into the affected vein using a very fine needle. The sclerosant irritates the inner lining of the vessel, causing it to swell shut and eventually collapse. The collapsed vessel is then gradually absorbed by the body over the following weeks, fading from view.

The procedure itself is performed in our Flowood aesthetics clinic and typically takes between 30 and 60 minutes depending on the number of vessels being treated. Most clients require multiple treatment sessions to fully address their spider veins, as each session can treat a limited area effectively.

What to Expect During Your Sclerotherapy Treatment

The Consultation

Your sclerotherapy journey at Glo-Med starts with a thorough consultation. We'll assess the location, size, and extent of your spider veins, discuss your health history to ensure you're a good candidate for the treatment, and talk through realistic expectations for your results. We'll also rule out any underlying venous insufficiency that might need to be addressed separately — because treating surface spider veins without addressing an underlying reflux issue can produce less durable results.

The Treatment Session

During your treatment, you'll be comfortably positioned and the skin over the treatment area will be cleaned. Using a very fine needle, our provider will inject the sclerosant solution into each targeted vessel. You may feel a mild stinging or cramping sensation during the injection — most clients describe it as tolerable, particularly given that no significant numbing is required. Each vein may require one or more injection points depending on its size and branching pattern.

After Your Treatment

Immediately following your sclerotherapy session, we'll apply compression to the treated area. Compression is an important part of the healing process — it helps keep the treated vessels closed while the initial healing takes place. We typically recommend wearing compression stockings for a period following your treatment, and we'll give you specific instructions based on your individual situation.

You can return to normal daily activities right after your appointment, though we recommend avoiding high-intensity exercise, hot baths, and direct sun exposure on the treated area for a few days. Walking is actually encouraged, as it helps circulation during recovery.

What Results Look Like and How Long They Take

The fading of treated spider veins is gradual. In the weeks following your treatment, the treated vessels will go through a process of inflammation and absorption. Many clients notice the veins initially look slightly darker or more prominent before they begin to fade — this is a normal part of the process and not a sign that something has gone wrong.

Most clients see significant fading within four to six weeks of each treatment session. For clients with extensive spider veins, multiple sessions are the norm, typically spaced three to six weeks apart. The results of sclerotherapy are long-lasting — the treated vessels don't return — though new spider veins may develop over time, particularly with ongoing contributing factors like prolonged standing or sun exposure.

Spider Veins on the Face

Facial spider veins — those visible red capillaries around the nose, cheeks, and chin that can give the face a ruddy, uneven appearance — are a different consideration. While sclerotherapy is the preferred treatment for leg spider veins, laser or light-based treatments are typically preferred for facial vessels because the skin in this area is more delicate and the vessels are often very small.

During your consultation at our Flowood aesthetics clinic, we'll assess your facial vein concerns and discuss the most appropriate treatment approach for your specific situation. Our goal is always to recommend what will produce the best result for you — not to sell you a treatment that isn't the right fit.
